Your Assessment and Treatment Options

Man with nice teethKnowing what a dental procedure involves can help you decide whether to go ahead. This includes understanding the possible benefits, risks, alternatives, costs, and aftercare.

At TC Smiles, treatment recommendations begin with an assessment of your dental health and a discussion about your needs. This page provides general information to help you prepare for that conversation.

Dental treatment isn’t the same for everyone. Your oral health, medical history, existing dental work, and personal goals can affect which options may be suitable.

Your dentist will explain the recommended treatment and any reasonable alternatives, including delaying treatment or choosing no treatment where relevant. Some procedures may require further investigations or referral to another practitioner.

Making an Informed Decision

Before treatment begins, your dentist will discuss what the procedure involves, its expected benefits, possible risks, and limitations. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask about recovery, ongoing care, and costs.

Let your dentist know about any medical conditions, medications, allergies, or previous reactions to dental treatment. If something is unclear, ask for more information before giving consent.

You may seek a second opinion from another qualified dental practitioner when considering your options.

Possible Risks and Limitations

All dental procedures involve considerations, and some carry more risks than others. Depending on the treatment, these may include:

  • Tooth or gum sensitivity, irritation, or discomfort following cleaning, whitening, or restorative treatment
  • Whitening that does not achieve the expected shade or change the colour of existing crowns, veneers, or fillings
  • Removal of natural tooth structure for some restorations, which may be irreversible
  • Chipping, wear, loosening, or the need to repair or replace dental restorations
  • Discomfort during orthodontic treatment and movement of teeth afterwards if retainers are not worn as advised
  • Bleeding, swelling, infection, nerve injury, or delayed healing following extractions or implant surgery
  • Reactions to medicines, materials, or anaesthesia, with additional risks where sedation is used

This list is not exhaustive. Your treating practitioner will explain the risks relevant to your proposed procedure and circumstances.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Treatment Timing, Recovery, and Aftercare

The number of appointments and time needed for treatment depend on the procedure and your individual circumstances. Healing and recovery also vary.

Your dentist will explain any preparation and aftercare instructions. These may include changes to eating or activity, cleaning around the treated area, attending review appointments, or wearing retainers.

Some treatments need ongoing maintenance, repairs, or replacement. These may involve costs beyond the initial treatment fee.

Individual Results and Expectations

No dental treatment can guarantee a particular result. Your oral health, general health, smoking, teeth grinding, and daily care may affect outcomes and how long they last.

Photographs or examples of other patients’ treatment do not predict your own outcome. Discuss your expectations with your dentist so you understand what may be achievable in your case.
