What’s Normal and What’s Not?

Right after a tooth is removed, it’s common to feel sore, swollen, or tender. Over-the-counter pain relief usually does the trick, and things typically improve within a few days. But when the pain gets worse instead of better, it could point to a problem like dry socket.

Could It Be Dry Socket?

Dry socket is one of the most common post-extraction issues. It happens when the blood clot that should form in the empty socket doesn’t develop – or comes out too soon – leaving the bone exposed. This leads to:

  • Sharp, throbbing pain 2-4 days after extraction
  • A bad taste or smell from the area
  • Pain that radiates toward the ear or jaw
  • A visible, empty-looking hole where the tooth was

Dry socket can be extremely uncomfortable and tends to worsen without prompt dental care. This isn’t something that heals on its own. It needs to be treated by a dentist straightaway to stop the pain and promote proper healing.

How We Treat It

If you’re in pain after an extraction, we’ll examine the area and clean the site if needed. In most cases, we’ll apply a medicated dressing to soothe the area and encourage the healing process to restart. If there’s another issue – like a lingering infection or root fragment – we’ll explain your options clearly and work with you to resolve it.
